March Madness…the early days

4 Teacups to “The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things” by Paula Byrne

Some very interesting things and descriptions in this book. Interesting concept to do the book by objects, rather than from beginning of her life to the end. The chapter about the two Topaz Crosses, for example, was worth the price of admission(lol, I obtained it from the P.L.). I won’t recommend this book to someone who hasn’t read a conventional bio(try Carol Shields’ book!) and all six completed books(Sanditon and the Watsons make appearances too!). I think Paula Byrne goes on too much about her theory that Jane Austen was a professional writer. The point was already proven. Yes, yes, yes…Jane wasn’t St. Jane that her brother Henry and her nephew James would have us believe. Any reading of the remaining letters would confirm that. By the way, Paula, while I admire you making the chapter on the portrait your husband found, and you champion as Jane Austen, very small….I didn’t see that info above in the book. Perhaps I missed it? I did see a comment, after I finished the book, on the dusk jacket. While I hope the portrait is real, I’m very rather doubtful. The Rice portrait, on the hand, must be Jane as it’s such a delightful image! 🙂 -Kirk

“James Digweed left Hampshire to day. I think he must be in love with you, from his anxiety to have you go to the Faversham Balls, & likewise from supposing, that the two Elms fell from their greif(sp) at your absence.-Was not it a galant(sp) idea?” JA to Cassandra Austen 11/21/1800

“Give a girl an education and introduce her properly into the world, and ten to one but she has the means of settling well, without further expense to anybody. ” ― Jane Austen

Great comments from All Things Jane Austen:

All Things Jane Austen Don’t forget about Emilia Fox’s mother who played Mrs. Gardiner in 1995 – Joanna David!

All Things Jane Austen In another connection (in this case to Jane Austen) Tamzin’s brother-in-law (Laurence Fox) is married to Billie Piper who played Fanny Price in Mansfield Park.

Darcy Connection: Tamzin Merchant (Georgiana Darcy 2005) and Emilia Fox (Georgiana Darcy 1995)

Did You Know? Tamzin Merchant’s boyfriend (and “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” co-star) Freddie Fox is the younger brother of Emilia Fox, Georgiana Darcy of the P&P 1995 BBC/A&E miniseries. Here in this recent photo, Tamzin (left) attended the “Hay Fever – Gala Performance after-party” with Freddie and his family including his sister Emilia (right).
