Jane Austen and the Navy/Two days before her Bday!!!

“(It is worth noting that in her certainty, decisiveness and self-confidence, Mrs Croft is established as a counter-figure to Anne, who own future would have been very different if she had possessed these same qualities in the summer of 1806, when she was ‘persuaded’ to turn Wentworth down”.) -Brian Southam “Jane Austen and the Navy” pg 280

“What arouses Mrs Croft to such an energetic account of her naval life is her rejection of Wentworth’s argument that as the ‘personal comfort’ of women cannot be provided for at sea, there is no place for them on board ship. This, it seems to Mrs Croft, is an instance of her brother’s ‘idle refinement!’, his having been tainted by the values of polite society, and she and her husband turn on Wentworth with some amusement, in the brisk and emphatic naval style they have in common:

‘But I hate to hear you talking so, like a fine gentleman, and as if women were all fine ladies, instead of rational creatures. We none of us expect to be in smooth water all our days.’
‘Ah! my dear,’ said the admiral, “when he has got a wife, he will sing a different tune. When he is married, if we have the good luck to live to another war, we shall see him do as you and I, and a great many others have done. We shall have him very thankful to any body that will bring him his wife.’
‘Ay, that we shall.’ ” -Brian Southam “Jane Austen and the Navy” pg282

“No such melodrama attends the relationship of Admiral and Mrs. Croft. The comedy of competence, when an emergency arises, is milder and more diffused, and harmony prevails – all this beautifully drawn in Anne’s observation of their narrow escapes in the gig with Mrs Croft on the look-out:

But by coolly giving the reins a better direction herself, they happily passed the danger; and by once afterwards judiciously putting out her hand, they neither fell into a rut, nor ran foul of a dung-cart; and Anne, with some amusement at their style of driving, which she imagined no bad representation of the general guidance of their affairs, found herself safely deposited by them at the cottege. “

-Brian Southam “Jane Austen and the Navy” pg 280

More Robert Lindsay Bday as Captain Pellew:

From Teresa Wrenn on FB: I fell in love with him for his line in Hornblower, when HH gets a promotion and is told in order to get a new uniform, Horatio must return to England. Astounded, young HH blurts out, “ENGLAND???” And his c/o calmly replies, (something to the effect) “Small island country in the North Atlantic, foggy, rains a lot…” Best line EVER!

Of Persuasion: “The great pleasures of this book are the nautical characters and the fine exhibition of Jane Austen’s scheme of morality” -John Fowles, Journal entry 12/30/1957 quoted in “Jane Austen and the Navy” by Brian Southam pg 263

“Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance.” –Charlotte Lucas, from PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

What, dear readers, do you think of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s marriage? There really is so much to discuss (and we often do on this page!). On one hand, the Bennet marriage is one of the greatest comic delights of literature. On the other, perhaps something else is going on. But what, exactly? Some modern readers deplore the marriage for various reasons while still others maintain that, for the time, it really wasn’t so bad after all (and in that vein we recommend the excellent short novel THE COLOUR OF MILK by Nell Leyshon. Not a P&P takeoff, just set in the same era, same locale and totally fascinating…).

“The previous tenant had left behind a single item, which was a paperback copy of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, a book that, oddly enough, she had always intended to read. She couldn’t help feeling there had been something deliberate – and something imperative, too – about this abandoned book, as though it had been specifically intended for her and that she was being enjoined to take it seriously” – Carol Shields from the short story “Invitations” in “Various Miracles” pg 139

Despite having the World Heritage Site of Bath as its backdrop, Northanger Abbey is the poor relation when it comes to adapting Jane’s canon for the screen. To date there have been only two versions, both for television, and where as the other quintet of
