12/5 Men in Snow, Happy Bday Gemma Jones, Advice from Aunt Jane

Part 1 of 2
“Throughout the correspondence in which, between 1814 and 1817, she secretly counselled her niece Fanny on her love affairs, ‘Aunt Jane” was anxious to stress her impartiality. ‘You frighten me out of my wits by your reference’ (to her judgement), she wrote in November 1814, adding firmly, ‘Your own feelings, and none but your own should determine such an important point’. ” -pg 146 “Jane Austen: A Companion” by Josephine Ross.
What did Fanny decide? Tune in tomorrow for part 2!

Part 2 of 2
“She might have been pleased when, in 1820 – in a curious echo of
Marianne Dashwood’s acceptance of Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility – the 26-year-old Fanny married a family connection, Sir Edward Knatchbull, a widowed Baronet aged almost 40. She would surely have been saddened, however, had she known that, years later, this ‘inimitable, irresistible niece’, who had once set so much store by her judgement, would look back on her authoress aunt with stiff Victorian snobbery, describing her as ‘not so refined as she ought to have been for her talent’, through having been ‘brought up in the most complete ignorance of the world and its way’. ” -pgs 146-147 “Jane Austen: A Companion” by Josephine Ross

Happy Bday Gemma Jones!

This one earned a 4.5 from me for several reasons.
Jane, a great location, a good mystery etc. And one
final factor that really touched me. The relationship
between Jane and her father Rev. George Austen. He helps
and supports her detective efforts. Also, this book is set
in Sept 1804, just 4 months before his passing in Jan. 1805.
This book also has a balanced view of Mrs Austen. She seems more like the Mrs Bennet of P&P ’05, rather than P&P ’95. -Kirk

As I’ve said soooo many times, one of the greatest lines in an adaptation is in this one. Excellently done Jeremy Northam indeed! -Kirk
