The Economist

Jane Austen is one of the most widely read and revered authors of all time. Born on this day in 1775, the cult of “Janeism” has ensured her legacy

The Globe and Mail

Moment in time: Dec. 16, 1775 – Jane Austen is born: Jane Austen’s sister called her a “dear Angel,” while some of the novelist’s 19th-century readers knew her only as “A Lady.” Austen – once an anonymous author and now one of Britain’s most celebrated writers – was born exactly 240 years ago, in 1775. Hollywood has turned her classic novels into box-office hits, although sometimes still on the stealth. Clueless, the 1995 flick starring Alicia Silverstone, riffs off Emma, as if no one would notice. Shades of Pride and Prejudice show up in Bridget Jones’s Diary. Kandukondain Kandukondain is a Tamil version of Sense and Sensibility. Even Austen’s unfinished work has fetched global attention. An unidentified buyer in 2011 paid $1.6-million (“U.S.) for a draft of The Watsons, which the author wrote in 1804. The manuscript sports edits in her handwriting. Austen wrote six books, two of which were published after she died in 1817.

More Birthday celebrations for Jane Austen’s 240th birthday!
Today, we congratulate scholars in the Music Department at the University of Southampton who have digitised the Austen Family Music Books: Professor Jeanice Brooks and Dr Samantha Carrasco (a former Chawton House Library Visiting fellow), have been working on this collection for many years, and revealed many insights to do with provenance and repertory.
A great many of these music books now belong to the Jane Austen House Museum. One subset is now on deposit at Chawton House Library, thanks to our Trustee Richard Knight. The other – still in private hands – is returning to Chawton House Library in 2016 for our ‘Emma’ exhibition with kind permission of the current owner, Professor Richard Jenkyns, Chair of the Jane Austen Society. ‪#‎EmmaAt200‬

I am so glad, that a girl named Jane Austen was born on a frigid December16th night in 1775…she has been such a great traveling companion for me in this life.
I love you Jane, and I can’t wait to meet you one day! Happy Birthday, homegirl!
This little watercolor was painted of her by her sister Cassandra and is the only actual picture we have of her face. Of course, she would love that I took a little fun liberty with this google image of her for her birthday!
On an interesting note, the lady that played Mr. Bingley’s sister Caroline (Anna Chancellor) in the 1995 version of Pride & Prejudice is an actual descendant of Jane’s and I think they sort of favor each other!

From Mark D. Aubrey:

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book!” – Miss Caroline Bingley in Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”.
Happy Birthday, Jane Austen, who would be 240 today and probably rather cranky about being so old.

Today is Jane Austen’s 240th birthday. I was surprised Google did not do a doodle for her. So I looked it up and found this one they did in 2010 for her 235th birthday–tho apparently not in the US. They must be completely out of touch. Jane Austen is huge here. Anyway, follow this link and you can see more Google Doodles! It’s fascinating. And Happy 240th Birthday Jane Austen!

Happy birthday, Jane. I hope you’re sitting on a sofa by the fire drinking as much wine as you like. smile emoticon

Happy 240th birthday to Jane Austen who, as my dad likes to point out, did most of the work on my forthcoming novel.
