It’s well known locally that I can’t stand even the mention of any of the three (very)Twisted English Sisters….I’ll make an exception for this lovely bit of “snark” from C. S. Lewis…. -Kirk
“How, then does Fanny Price fail? I suggest, by insipidity…One of the most dangerous of literary ventures is the little, shy, unimportant heroine whom none of the other characters value. The danger is that your readers may agree with the other characters.
That is why Charlotte Bronte would have succeeded better with Fanny Price. To be sure, she would have ruined everything else in the book: Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram and Mrs Norris would
have distorted from credible types of pompous dullness, lazy vapidity, and vulgar egoism into fiends complete with horns, tails, and rhetoric”. –

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(thank you C. S. Lewis for the best laugh in a week of massive headaches)

“Fanny also suffers from the general faults of Mansfield Park, which I take to be, if in places almost the best, yet as a whole the least satisfactory, of Jane Austen’s works. I can accept Henry Crawford’s elopement with Mrs. Rushworth: I cannot accept his intention of marrying Fanny. Such men never make such marriages”. -C. S. Lewis pg 31 “Jane Austen: A Collection of Critical Essays” Edited by Ian Watt

4 days on and I’m still sad this series is over….however since I jumped in at #4 Pies and Prejudice….I might read books #1-3 at some point…although I’m less likely to enjoy the middle school context. However, those books will probably be mostly in Concord…Concord wasn’t a focus in this book…as the Summer Camp was located in Pumpkin Falls(brilliant name!), NH. Also very sad that the ending wasn’t happy for one of my favorites. Grrrr! Godspeed Jess(Jane Bennet?), Emma(Anne Elliot?), and Cassidy(part Elizabeth Bennet?)!!!! Former mean girl Becca improved a lot in this one. And Megan(Anne Elliot’s very whiny middle sister Mary Musgrove?) started the book as she usually does. 5 Regency Teacups! -Kirk
